If you like Cussler's other books, you will like this one, too. Beginning with an ancient legend and a mysterious cabal, Cussler fast forwards to the present day where the descendants of the original cabal are planning a world takeover. Well, two separate world takeovers, to be accurate. The multu-skilled crew of the Oregon step in with a larger than usual high tech armory and manage to foil both plans in heroic fashion, while preserving their crew, saving dozens of innocent lives and discovering a vast compendium of ancient knowledge. If you like Cussler's other books, you will like this one, too. I enjoyed everything about this book except the ultimate reveal. The perpetrator has a 180 degree change of personality for the slimmest of reasons. I shook my head and couldn't embrace the impossibility of it.
The characters are interesting and fun. The friendships are believable and true. And Nary's South Philly Italian family reminded me of the large Italian family who lived next door when I was a youngster.....in a very good way.

Quick read and kept my attention, trying to guess who was the perpetrator. I missed my guess because there was quite a bit of information that we readers were not privy to until the epilogue.

Definitely enjoyed this interesting, easily-readable book full of quirky and interesting characters, and containing a mystery that the average reader probably won't guess until the answer is revealed at the end. I agree that it appears as though this book is a test float of a new lead character to stand alongside Alex Delaware, Kellerman's leading man for so many previous volumes.
The collaboration between father and son Kellerman is seamless. I could not immediately tell who's contribution was whose, which is how it should be, but if I had to guess, I would say it was Kellerman Junior who provided the insights on youthful urban culture.
I would enjoy more books with these characters, gentlemen.Definitely enjoyed this interesting, easily-readable book full of quirky and interesting characters, and containing a mystery that the average reader probably won't guess until the answer is revealed at the end. I liked Ruby and would read another book about her and Suzanne Greene, even though Suzanne was an awful lot like Kathy Bates' titular character in the late, lamented, TV series Harry's Law.

I am a longtime fan of Dale Brown and have read his entire catalogue. I enjoyed this book as well, although it took me a while to get interested in it (for which I deducted 1/2 star).
The action takes place in the near future where a very Putin-esque Russian leader launches a private war against the US on US soil. The unlikeable US president, a wily, a moral, politico, mistakes the attacks as a private attack on her by a techno-forward mercenary outfit run by a former US president.
Lots of action, lots of fun techno weapons and other war toys make the read interesting to those of us who enjoy such things.

I always enjoy Mr. and Mrs. Kellerman's books with their long time heroes who we have come to know so well. Decker and Lazarus are older now, live in a small eastern town instead of Los Angrles, but still manage to find a series of murders- old and new to solve. Working together, as always, and assisted by Decker's law student summer partner, the connection between crimes, old and new, and policemen, current and former, are unraveled.

Set during British colonial times in India, this book provides an excellent mystery set in an exotic location where tiger hunts, diamond excavation, and palace intrigue are the lifeblood of the aristocrats. The murder of the heir apparent to the Maharadja causes different responses by different factions and the disappearance of the chief accountant has everyone wondering if the princely diamond mines provided a motive.
This enjoyable book manages to both entertain and inform about colonial times in India, and points out where we are different and where we are very much the same as our Indian counterparts.Set during British colonial times in India, this book provides an excellent mystery set in an exotic location where tiger hunts, diamond excavation, and palace intrigue are the lifeblood of the aristocrats. I always enjoy Krueger's tales, and in my opinion this is one of his better ones. This book is deep and rich with its sense of place and the window it provides into the world of the native Americans of northern Minnesota.
But don't worry, there is a mystery at hand, and Cork O"Connor and his Indian and white friends combine to assist him in solving it. This is truly a story about community - relatives, old friends, neighbors, the natural environment - and how all of these entities coordinate to affect our lives for the better.

Beyond the fact that the villain of the piece is given a very small role, which was disappointing, I found this to be a fine commute read. The chapters are short, the plot is simple enough that you can pick it up several days later and not have forgotten a thing, and the high life of a wealthy man playing the spy is entertaining for those of us not among the 1%. Woods has written better books, but I didn't find this one nearly as inadequate as the previous reviewers did.Beyond the fact that the villain of the piece is given a very small role, which was disappointing, I found this to be a fine commute read. If you like Cussler, you will like Phelan. The Agency is fast-moving and chock full of action. The characters are on the shallow side. The action is the reason for the story, not character development. Mr. Phelan knows his technical information, which always appeals to me. Many of us who like this genre have a working knowledge of the technology, and when an author glosses over it, omits it, or just plain gets it wrong, that author doesn't respect his readers. You will not have that problem with Mr. Phelan's books. As always, I will eagerly await the next one.If you like Cussler, you will like Phelan. The Agency is fast-moving and chock full of action. I believe Paper Ghosts was falsely billed as a novel of suspense and because of that it disappointed me. I kep waiting for something suspenseful to develop, but it never did.
If you read this book, look at it as a psychological study of paranoia (the heroine's) and dementia (the hero's). It is at it's best when viewed as a travelogue through the blue highways and cities of Texas.

I agree with USAF1969. The book is ok and holds the reader's interest, but the main character is neither likeable nor admirable to this reader.
Texas Rangers are among the elite of law enforcement officers. Skilled, determined, and very professional. Yates, on the other hand, is a wild card, repeatedly defying both local police and his own supervisor, butting into the investigation, compromising evidence, harassing an individual he doesn't like because he wants this man to be the killer, not because there is hard evidence against him. He is indeed terribly immature and the real Texas Rangers wouldn't allow him to be a one man vigilante force.
Plus, speaking as a female, Yates is awfully full of himself and his attraction for the local women, who, with the exception of his ex-wife are all pining away for him while he dithers among them at first, but then immediately forgets about them when he sees the girl singer from the country band playing at his favorite roadhouse.

If a male character can be a genetically-enhanced super soldier, why not a woman? Not only that, but she is an assassin, an international jewel thief, has friends in convenient criminal places, and saves neighborhood teens from gang kidnappings.
Yes, the heroine is many things, has many identities and has the CIA and other international assassins on her trail.
If you enjoy James Bond, but think the Fleming books are a little too slow-moving for your tastes and would be better if the Bond girls were the heroines, this book will be right up your alley. This was both an interesting and believable story that read as smoothly as fine silk. The book is very true to what growing up and maturing in a midwestern industrial small town was like in the post WWII years. The hero is a man whose defining moment has come in high school, and rather than achieving anything further in life has continued to live in his home town, basking in the town's memory of his teenaged glory. His finest trait is his unwavering loyalty to his two childhood best friends and when one is murdered by the mob, this now middle-aged man finds the strength to do all the things he has avoided in his adult life and contacts the FBI with enough info to take down the local mobsters. In order to do so, he has to leave everything from his old life behind, especially his identity as high school hero. This was both an interesting and believable story that read as smoothly as fine silk. It was wonderful to see Mr. King get back in touch with his roots and write a creepy, legend-inspired, page-turner that you won't want to read just before you fall asleep. The story isn't entirely vintage King, but is close enough that those of us who fell in love with the early books could feel all the old chills and shudders. King's maturity as a writer is evidenced by his deeply developed and complex characters, all flawed in some ways, but able to forge a Tolkienesque fellowship for the destruction of the titular Outsider.
I don't blame King for deviating from the early books that made him famous. No author wants to continually write the same book for 40 years. Well, no talented writer does. And while I haven't liked his recent work as much, there were a few titles I really liked, but for different reasons. I found this blend of the old with the new very satisfying and hope he writes another similar book for his long time fans in the near future. It was wonderful to see Mr. King get back in touch with his roots and write a creepy, legend-inspired, page-turner that you won't want to read just before you fall asleep. For those of us not from the South, Louisiana can seem at times like a foreign country, mired in the past, hopelessly backward, and even degenerate. It is all if those things, but it is much more, too. And that more can take considerable time and effort to unearth.
Burke's Dave Robicheaux and his other unusual and colorful characters allow us to peek below the surface where we find both the squirming insect and the heart of gold, each living side by side in the same person or environment.
Like all of Burke's books this one is intelligently and beautifully written. If you are well-educated, you will have plenty of opportunities to pat yourself on the back as literary and historical references abound. If you are not, read this book with your tablet or laptop nearby and look up the references as you go along. You will get information along with your entertainment.

In my opinion in, this is an excellent first novel. It is sleek and streamlined, there are no unnecessary plot offshoots or diversions so common in first novels before an author learns to stringently edit. The characters are complex and interesting, as well as beautifully-drawn, and the core mystery is every bit as twisty and surprising as a reader could possibly want. I hope author Kiernan brings us a sequel with the same main characters.

Is how we die destiny or a self-fulfilled prophecy? That is the question the reader must ask himself as the tales of 4 siblings of the Gold family unfold
The premise the author presents is interesting. If we know the date of our death, how will it alter and inform our behavior throughout our lives. The four siblings around whom the tale centers visit a fortune teller as very young children. The fortune teller gives each child, separately, the date they will die. As they grow into adulthood, each carries this knowledge with them and it shapes their lives, always a factor in the life choices they make, and is a different type of burden for each one of them.
It proves to be a hard knowledge for the siblings and sometimes blinds them to their own self interest, particularly as their predicted dates get closer.
This book is dark and not particularly happy, although there are happy moments. I came away from it feeling relieved that I don't have to carry the burden of knowing the date of my death, and feeling that I have some control (illusory as that feeling may be) over my fate.Is how we die destiny or a self-fulfilled prophecy?
