I felt gut-sick reading this play about the lynching of a young black man and the responses of the townsfolk. James Baldwin is ever-brilliant, and I hate to say...you could pull a line out of this play and toss it up on Facebook and have it not seem all that out of place in today's rhetoric.I felt gut-sick reading this play about the lynching of a young black man and the responses of the townsfolk. This book was very real and hard to stomach. I do wish there was a little more introspection leading up to the resolution, but, it did a good job of depicting some important truths of the author's upbringing.

This book is FANTASTIC. The characters are lovable, their chemistry is wonderful! And I absolutely adored all of the different relationships that were highlighted--a girl and her brother, a girl and her friends, a girl and her grandparents, a girl and another cute queer girl. Without shying away from racism and homophobia, the author also presents an overwhelmingly positive, cute, and happy romance.
