Vivien Leigh is so well known for Gone With the Wind, but she shines here as well.

The movie is beautifully acted by all, the direction keeps it moving right along, the stars are certainly easy to look at, and the photography is striking, with an amazing long tracking shot in Waterloo Station, with Vivien Leigh walking through the crowds, all tarted up with a hard look on her face, looking for a John. The plot is a bit compressed in order to fit it all into a mere 108 minutes, but it's no more unrealistic than many other movies. But this movie isn't about realism, any more than "Titanic," which has much the same plot. Sure, it has flaws. In wartime England it should have been fairly easy for a single woman to find work. And, the whole story is told in a flashback by Taylor, but it includes events and conversations he couldn't possibly have known about, like the first time a man picks her up.
It's terrific entertainment, but if you think a good movie has to be a slice-of-life, maybe it's not for you.

It's hard to ignore the old storyline of the wronged woman having to kill herself because in desperation she turned to prostitution or some other aspect of being a ceiling expert.

1940 cornball romance during war.

This was Vivien Leigh's first film role after the success of Gone with the Wind. This is really a simple movie that you expect to be a typical war story romance, only it takes a turn that you don't expect. Very well acted, there's great chemistry between Robert Taylor and Vivien Leigh. She truly was a great beauty.

I happened to watch the gritty '31 version prior to this, enjoyed it very much, and decided to check out this one. They are different in that this one is more polished, and Myrna's fate was drastically changed in the two. Vivien Leigh was in her prime here, and this is a classic in her portfolio.

I enjoyed this DVD. The story was strong. The characters had some depth. The actors did a great job!

This is a 1940 remake of the 1931 film also called Waterloo Bridge, adapted from the 1930 play Waterloo Bridge.
In an extended flashback narration, it recounts the story of a dancer and an army captain who meet by chance on Waterloo Bridge.
As Myra Lester, Vivien performs superbly.
There is a world of difference between her depiction of the sweet-faced innocent who is mistaken for a school-girl at the start of the film and the sullen, worn creature who saunters through Waterloo Station.
She then gets miraculously reborn when she reunites with Roy.
Vivien shows you every shade of feeling.
Although their lightning courtship seems somewhat contrived, this film turns into a real tear-jerker.

The tragic romantic storyline and war years are accurately created here in superb fashion with two of the most talented stars of the 40s, Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor. The rest of the cast is wonderful and the directing is spot on by the great Mervyn LeRoy.
I saw this movie years ago, but it still haunts me with its tender scenes which are a bittersweet forerunner of the ultimate sad ending.
If you want to see how life was in England during the second world war, I strongly recommended this one.
