[August: Osage County] is not a comedy. This film is, along with [The Squid and the Whale], the most accurate dramatic portrayal of pathological narcissism that I've yet seen. There is no negotiation. There is no compromise. The only thing one can do is run and run quickly.

Hmmm. I don’t see WICKEDLY FUNNY, dark, hilarious as one critic said. It just felt like Meryl Streep was acting like a drunk, dysfunctional person dominating the family for no apparent reason. No story line.

I will always remember and often think of Meryl Streep's character in this and it makes me laugh. So I'm glad I have that on recall for when I need a chuckle. It's a lot of talking and drama and that's the whole movie.

I checked this out to see Sam Shepard, now deceased. Watched part of it , too boring for this senior.

The guy who said this is a ‘chick flick’ could not be more wrong. It is dark and painful.

It’s true that the female actors have the meatier roles, but the tragedy could just as well be father-son. Here the most explosive dialog is between mother and daughter. But the repercussions are far-reaching, affecting all characters.

The star is, of course, Meryl Streep, who, as always, immerses herself so completely in the role that she becomes the bitter, vile-tempered woman who repels everyone—including us, the audience. The rage that Streep channels is volcanic.

Julia Roberts is also outstanding; she plays the emotionally damaged daughter who gives as good as she gets. She has a lifetime of pain to pay back, and won’t let Mom off the hook.

If you suffered abuse as a child, you might want to avoid this film because it is truly painful; I found myself reacting physically, as in PTSD, because it felt so real.

The story is a human tragedy as timeless as one of Shakespeare’s tragedies. Don’t expect to be entertained. Just watch great actors at work.

Ah, god, keep me from these, please. Have I not lived it enough, but to watch it unfold on screen, who needs it? Up to date currently just add oxycodone to the story. Great acting, setting, drama, great actors, but I can live without watching one more story of defeat. Loss. The twist at the end is too much to bear. Hard to fathom. God, where do you go from there? But people do. "And I rise, and I rise, and I rise"... Yes, you must rise from the cards that are played at your birth or beyond, if you have the guts and heart to, some things you did not choose. And sometimes it's best to walk, or drive away.

This is purely a chickflick filled with endless dialogue and a paper thin plot.

this movie is a good movie however be advised it is a lot of curse words. but the story line sounds like your almost average family drama. lots of drama, but reality.

Star-studded but lacklustre, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY failed to live up to my expectations. I don't know what else to say. The story felt like it was building to some revelation but it really led to nothing. The whole family is acrimonious and there doesn't seem to be a happy ending in sight. The way I see it, this film is 121 minutes I'll never get back. What a disappointment. I don't recommend it.

Beverly: Violet. My wife.
She takes pills,
sometimes a great many.
The facts are:
my wife takes pills and I drink.
That’s the bargain we’ve struck, a
little paragraph of our marriage contract...Rather than..
once more vow abstinence
with my fingers crossed.
I’ve chosen to turn my life over
to a Higher Power..
and join the ranks of the Hiring Class. (He hired Johnna, an Injun as domestic help as his wife was fighting mouth cancer.)
It’s not a decision with
which I’m entirely comfortable.
I mean, I know how to launder my..
...dirty undies. Done it all my life,
but I’m finding that
it’s getting in the way of my drinking.

Barbara (Oldest Daughter): It's the pills talking.
Violet (Mother doped up): Pills can't talk!
Violet: You can't do this! This is my house! This is my house!
Barbara: You don't get it, do you? You don't get it! I AM running things now!

Beverly: "Life is very long...”
TS Eliot.
Not the first person to say it,
certainly not the first person to think it.
But he’s given credit for it because
he bothered to write it down.
Now, if you say it,
you have to say his name after it.
“Life is very long:” TS Eliot.
