Such a love letter to old-school comics in which the setting is the lead character, kind of like Sin City without the sleaze or Top Ten without the snark.

This is a great book, well worth reading. The cover artist, Alex Ross, is a genius. However, the cover for this collection didn't really grab me. The stories are strong enough, but are really just vehicles for the real strengths of the book, which are characterization and art. Both are in a class of their own. Cover: 4/5; Art 5/5; Story: 4/5; Characterization 5/5; Cool Factor: 4/5; Overall: 8.8/10

I love this series. Read this first volume years ago and just recently re-read it - it is still just as awesome as it was the first time. This is a series you can read over and over again, and the first volume is a great introduction that leaves you wanting more.

When I first got this book I thought it would be the same old thing that I have been reading in Marvel and DC for years. Instead, it opened up a new way of viewing how super powered beings live and work and love.

These aren't cartoon characters cut out of the hackneyed pattern that I was all too familiar with; these were people first and heroes second living their lives much like the rest of us with worries, hardships and the occasional joyful moment.

How refreshing it is and I look forward to reading more of these interestng men and women and life in Astro CIty.

I can't believe it took me this long to read Astro City.

Busiek's book turned the tide a bit (as did Watchmen, et. all), so these stories aren't so starkly uncommon in comics today, but there's still a very competent and literate quality to these shorts.

This first trade sets a high bar for the rest of the series.

Astro City is a place where superheroes fight super-villains. But unlike most superheroes, Astro City is not about adolescent male power fantasies. Rather this is a short story collection that explores middle age fears of being overworked. Women's dreams of independence. First dates of superheroes. Ideas and concepts uncovered by the likes of DC and Marvel.

Beautifully illustrated, this volume belongs on the shelves of most comic fans.
