In 1930 Marlene Dietrich and Josef Von Sternberg made Blue Angel (simultaneously filmed in German and English) and these films made Dietrich internationally famous. Hollywood brought them to the USA where they made six more films, of which Shanghai Express was one. Dietrich plays a close to the vest, secretive, laconic woman, smoking with sexuality, and damaged by events, but still in love. Hollywood got interested in Dietrich when they saw how famous Greta Garbo had become just years before. So I guess we can say that there were two Garbo-like actresses.
