This was an interesting read. The depth of the descriptions and the insight into the various characters personalities were well done. It was amazing to see how the main character came to grips with the various losses in his life. Very thought provoking.

I can’t say it better than Amazon does in its January 2015 book of the month review. How a person is shaped by the culture and landscape of his life shows so strongly in this book, as a former Montana prison guard struggles to understand his step-son and struggles with his faith as he confronts a “born-again” Christian prisoner who tortured him at the prisoner’s parole hearing.

Impressed with this debut novel by such a young writer & dare I say it...a woman. I felt she had an excellent grasp on the characters from the lost youth in rebellion & hurting to the older men & women with much life experience. The pain Wes feels in his hands was excellent in description, not to mention the pain from his other losses. Well written, good flow, never lost interest.

Debut novel by young woman. Excellent--one of the best debuts I've read in years.

I really enjoyed this beautifully written story. I liked the character of Wes - broken, angry, hurting, stoic - and his journey to find the peace of mind he seeks over past tragedies in life. A character study of a man who is not lovable, nor even likable much of the time, but is nonetheless irrefutably compelling.
