When Elvis Cole is hired to locate a woman who may have disappeared with a stranger she met online, it seems like an ordinary case -- until Elvis learns the missing woman worked for a defense contractor and was being blackmailed to supply explosives components for a person or persons unknown. Meanwhile, LAPD officer Scott James and his patrol dog, Maggie, enter an abandoned building to locate an armed and dangerous thief, only to discover far more than they expected: The fugitive is dead, the building is filled with explosives, and Scott and Maggie are assaulted by a hidden man who escapes in the chaos, all as a bloodied Joe Pike watches from the shadows. Soon, Scott and Maggie find themselves targeted by that man, and, as their case intertwines with Elvis and Joe's, joining forces to follow the trail of the missing woman as well. From inner-city drug traffickers to a shadowy group of Afghan war veterans with ties to a terrorist cell, the people they encounter on that trail add up to ever-increasing odds, and soon the four of them are fighting to find the woman not only before she is killed but before the same fate happens to one of them.

This is the 2nd book I've read by Robert Crais and I quite enjoyed it. I love the character of Scott James and his wonderful dog Maggie. I did find it difficult, at times, to keep track of the police. A lot of names coming at once but it was a satisfying read.

Entertaining and fun read. Typical fast-paced action and quick-witted dialogue. Nice to see Crais bringing together Cole, Pike, and James

This is one of Crais' better novels! I love the interplay between Elvis, Scott and Maggie.

The "Philadelphia Inquirer" is quoted as saying this book " may be Crais' most remarkable book of all". A book that devotes page space to how a dog thinks, what's on the mind of a dog ...really the author's best so far?? I almost stopped reading at that point. I did, however, finish the book as I was interested in the plot, but the "guy talk" dialogue was a turn off as were the many acronyms used for various positions in the policing forces.

Yes, there are a lot of characters besides Cole, Pike and Jon Stone, however, they were all introduced with clarity and fit neatly in this thriller that nothing is as it seems. And as the detectives were busy with their heroics, the ex-Marine Maggie stole the show and hearts of the readers.

I've read just about everything Robert Crais has written and this is my favorite of all of them. The Promise is an intricate, intriguing and gripping mystery that intertwines Cole, Pike and K-9 officer Scott James and his dog Maggie. I couldn't put it down.

The woman stood in the far corner of the dimly lit room, hiding in Shadows like a fish in gray water.

Charles steered her toward the front door like a shopping cart.

He planned the play and worked the plan. Always. Rules. … Making rules gave him order and following those rules gave him peace. His most important rule was one of the first he learned. Never leave a witness.

“Thanks for not shooting me. “ “Too much paperwork.”

Six minutes earlier, she would have walked in on me. Six minutes later, I would’ve driven away and missed he. Sometimes the Private Detection Gods smiled.

I didn’t like how the Dodge had waited to turn. He could have easily turned behind me, but he waited until another car was between us. Drivers in Los Angeles never waited. Other drivers ran over you.

“Military Working Dog?” “Marines. She was trained up dual-purpose. Explosives and patrol.” Johnson looked over Maggie as if he wanted to buy her, but didn’t have enough cash.

Each time she sniffed, scent molecules collected on bony plates in her nasal cavity. These molecules collected a few at a time until enough were gathered for Maggie to recognize. This didn’t take many. With more than two hundred million scent …

“Listen, so you know, just because some idiot sells this crap doesn’t mean it’s going to terrorists. All-American morons from grenades into paperweights, and RPGs into lamps.”

… cheetahs do best of all the big cats, with a kill ratio of nearly fifty percent. The deadliest four-legged African predator is not a bit cat. It cannot be outrun or outdistanced, its pursuit is relentless, and it captures its prey none out of every ten ..

She stared into the cup as if she didn’t remember why it was empty.

Cole might be one of those people who colored outside the lines, but people who hung it over the edge weren’t always wrong.

Juanito couldn’t afford shoes, let alone a house.

The Los Aneles River flowed southeast across the bottom of the San Fernando Valley to Griffith Park, where it made a hard right turn past Dodger Stadium, Chinatown, and Downtown L.A. to the Long Beach Freeway like a fated lover anxious to find her mate.

Scott’s mouth felt dry as an East L.A. sidewalk at noon.

“Why? (Deputy Chief)” “Because a sonofabitch was trying to kill me and my dog. (Waters)”
