The problem with Shaolin Cowboy is that Geoff Darrow is a draftsman and not an artist. He's an illustrator and not a storyteller. Shaolin Cowbowy is an overlong joke, a zen koan told at the expense of the reader's time. Badly paced, and with beautiful illustrations used so poorly than they actually harm the flow of the story, Shaolin Cowboy makes me want the time I spent on it back.

Darrow works as a concept artist. He works as an illustrator for other people's ideas. He is hopeless on his own.

This is pretty much the comic book equivalent of the ridiculous fight scene from “They Live”. There are moments in the beginning where you think there might be some plot threads that will be developed later, but no. This is really just a ridiculous, brilliantly shot, 5 minute fight scene / music video spread across several issues and part of me really digs that Geof was able to get away with this. Maybe it’s because I was reading this in real time as the issues came out and wondering how long the joke could go on and then also how abruptly it ended, without any “FINAL LAST ISSUE!” promotional hype. That effect is probably lost when reading the graphic novel, but I can’t understate that point enough: in this day and age where everyone knows who is going to be on the new revamped X-Men team months before the issue is even out, this series really surprised me. Even left me kind of angry.

I really dig that Geof was able to get away with that.

Pretty much over 100 pages of zombie chop up drawings. Darrow basically drew the same thing over & over, with basic variations. Zombies & chainsaws. But it IS well-drawn & pretty funny. No plot or story at all. Still great.
