Mariame drops out of school and joins a girl gang where she begins to find confidence. This film makes efforts to portray the reality of class, race, and gender in Paris and how they intersect to force Mariame into an early adulthood that keeps her without choice or security. Rarely do we get movies that show the strength of bonds between girls--even amidst all of the bad choices of youth and a socioeconomic status that guarantees struggle. How girls protect each other in a world that seems hellbent on denying them time and space to decide for and learn about themselves! Directed by Celine Sciamma--someone who endlessly looks for new lenses to present women through; I love her work so much!!!!

I felt the movie was entertaining and sad. It really clued you in as to what Black youth have to face in France.

Excellent and thoughtful movie with very fine chemistry among the actors. The subtleties and sensitive nuances add interest and make the movie more engaging. Not everyone will pick up on these, of course. Definitely worthwhile for discriminating movie viewers as well as those interested in recent French banlieue immigrant culture.

Quite a good movie about a young black girl in the Paris suburbs trying to find a way to independence.

Watch this film (from female perspective of life in a French project) with another DVD set in another French project area: May Allah Bless France. The second movie is about a young male trying to find his way to express himself musically.

Both films convey the frustrations of trying to get through each day while wanting better options for life in the face of adversity. One cannot wait forever.

another moving coming-of-age film from Celine Sciamma who directed the excellent Tomboy.

will Marieme be able to move away from all of the people who are trying to control her life and make it on her own terms?

This movie is more for a younger audience.

A coming of age movie that just seems to go on and on without a real sense of any coming of age.

Extremely boring and sleep inducing celluloid about a bunch of LOSER females that think they're cool period.

It's a bad ghetto movie with no end to it. Ghetto movies were made to teach and have a moral to them but this one is just a waste... The movie is very slow and unrealistic..... The girls skips school but the parents don't know about it? And when the main character was offered a job she violently refused it and the lady never told her mother!? That is unrealistic especially in this ghetto community where gossip is the fuel of the day. The story is too simple and some parts don't make sense....
