I went to that same high school that Mackenzie talks about a little bit in the book - Hollywood Professional School. I only attended my senior year - I had just moved from Florida. Both Mackenzie and Valerie were also seniors. We had like 20 people in our graduating class - that school was a trip! Mackenzie, Valerie B, Rae Dawn Chong, Lance Kerwin, and Leif Garrett were all there that year. Mackenzie and Valerie only attended occasionally - I remember Mackenzie had a really cool red convertible mercedes. The stories in the book about the school were right on! It was a bizarre experience - all grades 1-12 attended in the same building. I had a kid who was on another sitcom offer me qualudes in the hallway. Seriously! I just laughed and told him "no thanks". Someone needs to write a book about that school.

A roller coaster of a ride. Phillips is honest and brutally straightforward. Messed up parents equals addicted children? John Bradshaw thinks so. The book is a page turner - I made notes off it to review her interviews and TV appearances etc that are on YouTube.

Depression, recession hits the land of the free. Too many years and so many roads have passed to remember who wrote all the lyrics that go through my head when I'm slipping into darkness. Never known for my timing, delivery or material this was not the best time to read the darkest book I've read since that summer in '91 when I tried to read VC Andrews. As an ex Mormon and amateur cult scholar I am so excited to hear her speak now knowing she got clean in a Scientology rehab. I had a yuge crush on this rebel growing up and had no idea she too was struggling through the 80's. It wasn't just the drugs either. I mean who wasn't doing coke with a parent? But the rest of it was just awful. I'll be listening carefully for any cult lingo and wondering if some of these "memories" were implanted during an auditing session with an e-meter doing some aggressive regression therapy?

If you are a lover of non-fiction autobiographies, add this little number to your list. Mackenzie Phillips is raw and gritty, a no-holds-bar kind of book. Her life as the child of a famous rock and roll star and gaining her own fame in One Day at a Time shows how fame and too much indulgence can totally ruin your life and damage emotionally those close to you. You will not be able to put down this book

Fascinating book. What an amazing life. Incredible that she survived. I think Phillips is a brave woman to tell her story with such honesty.

A very good book. This book was hard to put down.
It deals with fame, drugs, incest, rape & the vicious ride of stardom.

A very brave memoir. The author chronicles a lifetime of excess, drug addiction and the struggle to get sober. Gritty, jaw dropping and outrageous, this story will keep you turning the pages late into the night. It is truly amazing that the author is alive to tell her incredible story. The paperback edition devotes a brand new chapter with respect to the damage/ fallout her book caused with her immediate family and circle of friends.

Very gritty and to the point autobiography. Lots of details of drugs and some incidents of incest and rape.
