When Kurt Cobain died by his own hand in April 1994, it was an act of will that typified his short, angry, inspired life. Veteran music journalist Charles R. Cross fuses his intimate knowledge of the Seattle music scene with his deep compassion for his subject in this extraordinary story of artistic brilliance and the pain that extinguished it. Based on four years of exhaustive research, with exclusive access to Cobain's unpublished diaries, Heavier than Heaven traces Cobain's life from his early days in a trailer to his rise to fame, success, and the adulation of a generation.

In my top 5 best biographies. Would recommend this to anyone interested in the true lives of musicians. This is one of the more reliable Kurt Cobain/Nirvana biographies, which covers his entirely too brief of a life.

The most comprehensive, authoritative biography on Cobain. Deeply researched and well written. A must-read for any serious Cobain fans.

Charles Cross's elaborate emotional telling's of the events before Kurt's death are morbid and abstract. I have never read a biography so touching and easy to describe the aura of a room of the depressed homicidal tendencies of a fortunate genius who had lost his grip on reality.
The best story of his Kurt's life is the love of his rat... wild rat who he accidentally killed by missing his step and breaking the rats neck from a latter changing a light bulb. I cried, but the despair that he went through and to be able to feel and journal. Most people do not in a darkened room.

The audio book version was good however I personally enjoyed reading the actual text more. Perhaps one of the best biographies I've read. Cross employs extensive research and superb writing skills to illustrate a history of a rock star that reads like a novel. "Heavier than Heaven" will keep you captivated until the very end even though you already know the ending.
