Too long of a movie that could have been told in far less time. Spall makes a good Mr. Turner but after the first 20-30 minutes I lost interest.

Another obsessed painter's life with beautiful scenery.

Do you like delving deeply into a character's life and relationships? Then this is a film you will love. Mike Leigh (director of Secrets & Lies, Another Year, Happy-Go-Lucky) bring his genius to yet another movie in this thoughtful and beautiful exploration of the brilliant 19th-century British impressionist painter, JMW Turner. The film takes a leisurely stroll through the last 26 years of the artist's life: his loving relationship with his father, his authoritative leadership of the Royal Academy of Arts, his private, long-lasting liason with a woman who rented him rooms at the seaside, but mostly, his passion for his art. Don't miss the bonus feature, The many colours of Mr. Turner. You'll gain a better appreciation of the artist, and also the massive feat that Mike Leigh and his team pulled off in creating this gorgeously-filmed period piece.

Cool movie. Slow and gentle and interesting, and at moments cinematically beautiful. Worth watching.

Many of the negative comments stem from disapproval of the biographical and historical facts. Others feel the film 'goes nowhere'. I am aligned with the audience that expects nothing more of this than it be a work of art. There is a notion out there that we have a responsibility to live up to our vision. One critic went so far as to state Mike Leigh is burdened with a twisted imagination. It is worth pointing out that there are many choices with regard to imagination; one is to stifle it. Another is to be driven by it. Mr. Turner found a way to express it. Key to that is the discipline of returning to the work. Few are up to the 'Cruel to be kind' exponents (and perhaps their kindness comes out at every opportunity), but their legacies sometimes provide a transcending vision.

Slow to the point of being boring, and way too long at 2.5 hours. The only redemption for this film is cinematography, giving the viewers some visual enjoyment at times. Overall disappointing.

A beautiful film to look at, but I was put off by the creative liberties that were taken. There is no historical record of Turner having a sexual relationship with his housekeeper. He was eccentric, to be sure, but this piggy portrayal was not necessary and unfairly tarnishes his legacy.

The attention to historic detail is amazing, as is the cinematography and costumes... this movie does deserve the Oscar nominations in those categories...but Mr. Turner himself was a stomach turner - you could miss this movie and not miss it - not much to carry away...

Much enjoyed, particularly the rivalry scenes at The Academy.Timothy Spall was ideal for the part of the eccentric Turner and the coastal scenery was magic.

The cinematography and Timothy Spall's grunting gargoyle made this one enjoyable for me. The presentation of Turner's final quarter century on this Earth was dismal and ineffectual for me.
