This is a great story that intersperses a whole lot of true historical reference about Japan in the mid 1800's. A lot of adventure and heroic virtue is exemplified in the characters. Schools should include this in their literature curriculum.

I love this book! So interesting...
Credit to the author, Margi Preus. I love the story of Yoshi! He is always watching samurai fighting and wants to become one himself. The the Americans come on steamships, and Yoshi wants to fight in a war. There are two perspectives in the story, one of Yoshi and one of Jack the powder monkey. Epic Tale!
