This book is very relevant with what is happening right now in the news. Evan is from a rich family. Alma’s family takes care of the yard. Evan and Alma go to the same school. Evan is a senior and Alma is a junior. Sparks fly immediately between them. Her Dad doesn’t want Alma to see Evan. Evan’s family would be furious to see Evan with someone below their status. Evan’s uncle is a US Senator who believes in catch and release. Catch the “illegals” and release them back to Mexico. Soon there is an ICE raid on the chicken factory and lots of Alma’s relatives and people in the neighborhood are rounded up. Alma knows she needs to stay away from Evan because of his uncle but soon trusts him that she is an undocumented person. Evan and Alma’s brother play soccer together and become close. This book is all about a love that is so strong it is tested with all the obstacles thrown up in their way. This book shines a spotlight on how the undocumented live in fear of being caught. They are hardworking people contributing to their community. We need to figure out the immigration issue so that undocumented immigrants who are contributing to their community, living a nonthreatening life can live here without fear of being deported. This story brought out all kinds of emotions in me
