Nothing is what it seems in this Casablanca-style international thriller set in the ancient Chinese city a week before the attack on Pearl Harbor. U.S. Secret Agent Paul Soames has just arrived to investigate the murder of his best friend, only to become quickly immersed in a web of conspiracy and lies that beset the city. Shadowed by a Japanese intelligence officer Tanaka, Soamesb2s investigation quickly centers on a charismatic local gangster, Anthony Lanting.

The story is a little lacking and maybe tries to mimic a Casablanca style too much. The one thing that may have been close to truth was the occupation of China by Japan just before the United States entered WWII. The characters didn't bother me, but they did not exceed my expectations either. Neither did the story. OK film.

Real bummer, too much violence. Cusack a favorite but not in this one.

My sentiments exactly, jpozenel. An underwhelming neo-noir. Cusack was Cusack, he's pretty much always the same; and Li-Gong is a very attractive woman, but her awkward acting skills (in English) were 'lost in translation'.

The trailer looked much better than the actual movie.
