This drama takes a long, detailed look at the infamous 1919 Chicago White Sox scandal. A wide variety of Hollywood celebrities play interesting roles. 'Back to the Future' and 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' star Christopher Lloyd is a particular treat to watch. The character portrayals make the overall story riveting. While what's going to happen is a foregone conclusion, it's still pretty nice to see how everything worked out in detail. The only flaw, although it's somewhat of a big one, of the movie is that it shows the actual White Sox players in a pretty sympathetic light.

There's nothing inherently wrong with such a bias given that it's not a documentary. As well, the real historical record states that there were no easy lines between 'black hats' and 'white hats' in this scandal, with multiple figures coming off pretty badly. Still, that's worth considering even when watching such a fine film.

This is a great movie, wonderfully acted, written, and directed. Not just for sports lovers: it's a story of tragic, gradual moral corruption. A must-see.

PS--People who give zero stars to a movie they haven't watched, based on externalities like the physical quality of a particular disk, are deeply clueless.

Unlike other nostalgic baseball films (THE NATURAL, FIELD OF DREAMS), director John Sayles's EIGHT MEN OUT explores one of the darkest moments in the history of the sport--1919's infamous Black Sox scandal, when eight players on the heavily favored Chicago White Sox agreed to throw the World Series. Based on Eliot Asinof's 1963 book of the same name, the film investigates why the players--including the great Shoeless Joe Jackson, who many believe belongs in the Hall of Fame--would purposely lose the most important game of their lives. Set in the same time period as Sayles's MATEWAN, EIGHT MEN OUT shows how money and exploitative labor conditions destroy the purity of the game. Even though the film has no star parts and ends on a bleak note, EIGHT MEN OUT was the second Sayles film to receive financing from a major studio. Studs Terkel appears as the famous journalist Hugh Fullerton, who exposes the scandal, while Asinof and Sayles also have small roles. - from: rotten tomatoes

Buck Weaver: You get out there, and the stands are full and everybody's cheerin'. It's like everybody in the world come to see you. And inside of that there's the players, they're yakkin' it up. The pitcher throws and you look for that pill... suddenly there's nothing else in the ballpark but you and it. Sometimes, when you feel right, there's a groove there, and the bat just eases into it and meets that ball. When the bat meets that ball and you feel that ball just give, you know it's going to go a long way. Damn, if you don't feel like you're going to live forever.
