Life for Easy Rawlins is surprisingly... easy. He's living off the proceeds of his last case, trying to keep out of trouble. Of course it's not going to last. Because Easy's old friend Mouse knocks on his door. Mouse is one of the deadliest men in America. And Mouse wants a small favour. He wants Easy to help a man he says is wrongly imprisoned, a friend of Charcoal Joe. Charcoal Joe is a mythical figure in the LA underworld - he pulls all the strings but keeps out of sight. Reluctantly, Easy agrees - he owes Mouse his life. But this is no small favour. It's going to be Easy's deadliest investigation yet. It's going to take him from the beaches of Malibu to the shadiest stretches of Sunset in a frenetic adventure through a wild and unrepentant city.

I like the early Easy Rawlins books better. Its as though he's lost touch with Easy. This is not one of Mosely's better books.

"Charcoal Joe" by Walter Mosley an instant classic, featuring Easy Rawlings, the detective character, who investigates the murder of a gangster in order to protect an innocent Physics genius who stands accused of the crime. Easy Rawlings is hired by the powerful gangster convict Charcoal Joe, who learns about his detective skills from Easy's old friend, Mouse. The multiplicty of twists, and turns keeps the story's plot interesting. The unique characters represent a across section of the populous of Los Angeles City. I could not put it down..

Painful! I had to read a book by an author of color and chose this one! Didn't like the actions of the main character and found it too confusing because there were so many characters in the book.

The latest (2016) in Walter Mosley's long-running Easy Rawlins detective series. This book is set in late 1960s L.A.
