The acclaimed author of Letters from Skye returns with an extraordinary story of a friendship born of proximity but boundless in the face of separation and war. Luc Crépet is accustomed to his mother bringing wounded creatures to their idyllic château in the French countryside. Yet his maman's newest project is the most surprising: Clare Ross, a fifteen-year-old Scottish girl who inspires Luc in ways he never thought possible. Then, just as suddenly as Clare arrives, she is gone, whisked away by her grandfather to the farthest reaches of the globe. When she returns years later, World War I is raging. Will Luc and Clare, both altered by the conflict and the many years apart, be able to find each other and recapture what was lost? --Publisher

What I really find valuable in this writer's books is the amount of effort she puts into research to fill out the story-line. In this case it's the masks made for wounded servicemen at the end of WW1 - and if you google the subject you can find many photos of the incredible difference the artists made in designing and fitting these masks. It's incredible. Her research adds so much depth to her story-lines in each of her books and for me, that's what sets her apart.

While I enjoyed Brockmole's 'Letters from Skye, I found that the characters in this book weren't very well-rounded and the plot seemed a bit old. Still, it was a light, entertaining read.

I adored this book and even after many months the thought of the masks keep returning. A wonderful read!

A well-woven and enjoyable story, although it progresses a little slowly and reads a bit like a Lifetime movie at times. Overall an easy read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction/light romance.
