When Hatteras Island old-timer Iola Anne Poole passes away at ninety-one, the struggling young mother in her rental cottage finds herself charged with cleaning out Iola's rambling Victorian house. Running from a messy, dangerous past, Tandi Jo Reese never expects to find more than a temporary hiding place within Iola's walls. But all that changes when she discovers eighty-one carefully decorated prayer boxes. Hidden in the boxes is the story of a life of an unassuming but complex woman passing through the seasons of an extraordinary, unsung life filled with journeys of faith, observations on love, and one final lesson that could change everything for Tandi.

I read Lisa Wingate’s “Before We Were Yours” book before this, and I thought it was a better book than this.
This was an okay story. I thought there was a little too much superfluous verbiage. You could take out many lines in this book and still not miss much. I have a hard time reading lines that really have no bearing on a story.
The other thing I didn’t like is I felt Tandi spent too much time bemoaning her upbringing. She had a lousy upbringing, but it seemed to be brought into every part of her life. It got old quickly.
It was a good storyline and the character development was good. They were realistic and, for the most part, likeable

I really liked this book. Forgiveness and generosity never go out of style.

Bad execution of a brilliant story idea. Epic failure to capture the magic of Hatteras Island. This books is a far cry from Nicholas Sparks' Nights in Rodanthe.

I cannot fathom how this book made the list of the 101 best romance novels of the past 10 years. Pat Conroy, Dorthea Benton Frank, and Elin Hilderbrand eloquently and passionately write beach books.

Although the author visited Hatteras Island, she failed miserably in assimilating the culture. This book could have and should have been written about a struggling small town in the author's native Texas. It would have made for a wonderful, inspiring Hallmark movie.

The plot was clunky. The story arcs were poorly delivered.

I really enjoyed the book. There were enough story lines and twists to keep it interesting, and most of the characters had some depth so you could relate to them. I'm looking forward to the prequel!

The book was okay – but not one of my favorites.
