From the New York Times best-selling author of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires comes an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist that blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of '80s pop songs into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller.
The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act...different. She's moody. She's irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she's nearby. Abby's investigation leads her to some startling discoveries—and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

What a wild ride! I found myself eager to pick it up when I had the chance. This is truly a love story to the 1980s, all the ups and downs of high school, and the power of friendship. I was (mostly) prepared to be in a state of suspense and dread but what I didn’t expect was a sweetness to the story. I’ll be checking out more of Hendrix’s work!

I've always been suspicious of any book where the title promises so much (this is up there with the best fiction title I have ever seen), but I devoured this book. This book has a great relationship at its heart, and would even work well without the discussion without the supernatural element. Puberty, high school and far of change work well together to make this story fast moving and believable. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I'm late to the party, but this book was fantastic. I would give it 6 stars if I could! Read it in one evening, and loved it.

A heroic friendship in the 80's is the canvas for this absolute gem of comedy horror fiction. It might sound strange to praise an exorcism for its realism, especially considering there's no small amount of fully intended silliness, but the actions of these characters are 100% believable, and they never lose their agency even when knee deep in the demonic vomit of a climax.
Compelling throughout, Hendrix creates an 80's in the south that's believable and frustrating, so much so that the unholy goings-on hardly seem out of place and Abby's battle to save her friend is completely engrossing. A must-read for horror fans or for those who grew up in the time period.

This horror novel features demonic possession.

Review excerpt: "If you are pining for 1980s tribute fare like 'Stranger Things', and you love books that focus on friendships between women, and you can tolerate some gross content, then I highly recommend 'My Best Friend’s Exorcism'. It is not a romance, but it does have a great, though platonic, love story between two teenage girls who battle occult forces in 1988. And yes, the paperback cover is a perfect facsimile of a beat-up VHS tape."

Not only did this book have genuinely creepy moments, it also made me cry like a baby during emotional scenes. Somehow it’s both a horror, and a sweet coming of age story.

I grabbed this book for a lazy summer hammock day and it did not disappoint. It gripped me from the beginning and compelled me to keep reading chapter after chapter. At turns heartwarming and immensely creepy- sometimes even disturbing- the characters feel true to life.

I really enjoyed this book. The story line gripped me from the very beginning and dragged me inward all the way through. I couldn't wait to finish this book. The ending was bitter sweet because I am not really sure what I expected, but this wasn't it. All the time spent on the details of their friendship pre, during, and post possession. The ending seemed like it was quickly thrown together to meet a deadline. Over all I liked the book and I recommend it to anyone who likes a little bit of uneasy reading. I mean the kind of storys that make you laugh, cry, make your jaw drop, make you say "what?!? no!" , this would be one of those books.

this was a weird one. there were some parts that were seriously creepy and disturbing and others that were really cheesy, like the bible thumping bodybuilders. this book gave me so many feels. I loved how Abby does the right thing no matter what. even when not only are the adults unhelpful, they actively try to stop her from helping her friend and she is accused of crimes she didn't commit and all her other friends abandon her.
