Think you have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Jack White? Now you'll know even more...almost too much, even though White did not cooperate with this book (no surprise there). I was an early White Stripes fanatic, and while instantly recognizing White as the rock guitar god he is, I also recognized he had some “issues”. They’re all here--the good and the bad—in an attempt to explain and understand a man who is enigmatic to say the least. A lot of the book focuses on his climb through the ranks of the Detroit music scene, and later his tortured relationship with Detroit. And his tortured relationships in general. After a slow start, we climb aboard the rocket ship the White Stripes became—first really in the UK, then North America. Not a perfect man, that's for sure. The White Stripes were perfectly imperfect.

This extremely detailed account of Jack White's life is meticulously researched and thorough, but to such an extent that it's also what weighs the book down. It reads more like a script for a movie or documentary than a book. The author eases up on the amount of quotes as Jack enters his post-White Stripes career which allows for a more enjoyable read.
I learned so much from this book and I am grateful that someone finally took on the task of writing about this elusive, crazy-talented, and sometimes puzzling artist.
