Campaign financing is one of today's most divisive political issues. The left asserts that the electoral process is rife with corruption. The right protests that the real aim of campaign limits is to suppress political activity and protect incumbents. Meanwhile, money flows freely on both sides. In Plutocrats United, Richard Hasen argues that both left and right avoid the key issue of the new Citizens United era: balancing political inequality with free speech. The Supreme Court has long held that corruption and its appearance are the only reasons to constitutionally restrict campaign funds. Progressives often agree but have a much broader view of corruption. Hasen argues for a new focus and way forward: if the government is to ensure robust political debate, the Supreme Court should allow limits on money in politics to prevent those with great economic power from distorting the political process.

Books such as this one really do not add anything to the discussion, the overall assumption being that we exist in a democracy. If you vote again and again, and it never changes economic policy, then your voting is useless. Personally, I don't believe America has had a legitimate government since the coup d'etat of 1963. Until the false binary frame is discarded - - i.e., that there is some actual difference between the republican wing of the Bankster Party, and the democratic wing of the Bankster Party, we will not be making any headway!
Gary Gensler changes his views and works hard to get at least minimal oversight of credit derivatives, then almost immediately Sen. Mikulski, a supposed democrat, hands it over to the republicans; she negated it!
Sen. Patty Murray of Washington talks about women's rights and pro-choice, but then votes on the macro issues to limit and destroy said rights [by voting for John Roberts for the Supreme Court, but voting for any legislation promoting forced arbitration, et cetera!].
Until the submediocre masses recognize the rightwing democrats for just that, little to no headway will ever be forthcoming!
[To fully understand political theater understand this: VP Joe Biden, Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas were involved in placing neocon Thomas on the Supreme Court - - Ms. Hill went on to a tenured position at an Ivy League university, Joe Biden went on to become vice president of the country, and Thomas sits on the SCOTUS bench. Quite the play, benfitting all players!]
