The land is very old, yet to some, very new, and the Cimarron River is now a dividing line between white settlers and native dwellers. As weary settlers begin to infiltrate the Kansas area, a young family arrives on a lonely stretch of the Cimarron River. Elizabeth O'Day and her husband, Tom, have been told that the area is safe for whites. On the other side of the Cimarron River a Kiowa woman, Ki-Ki-Tai, has enjoyed an idyllic childhood and happy marriage to her husband, Nakai, known better as Hungry Wolf. An uneasy peace endures between the people on each side of the river, the two groups managing wary interactions. It seems the river's two cultures will be able to live in harmony, until the War Between the States erupts nearly simultaneously with the long-standing conflict between Comanche and Kiowa. Then the winds of bloody war sweep across the Cimarron land from every direction, destroying hopes for a peaceful life.
