Starting from the discovery of the Americas, the author details how the lust for gold drove the Spanish to search and plunder the new world. Even after they had set the treasure fleets in motion to Spain, the government appears to have time and again sunk into debt through the course of wars, mismanagement, and even an early case of "Dutch disease" discouraging industrialization at home. Full of anecdotes of ships full of millions of pesos being captured, running aground, or lost in storms.
The author takes many opportunities to showcase a coin from his own collection that was present at the scene hundreds of years ago.
