Leslie Caron stars as an innocent young girl, a vulnerable orphan waif who finds a home with the puppet show in a traveling circus--and the love of a man who, at first, can only open his heart through the deeds and words of his marionettes--Lili. Set adrift in life at the age of 16, young Lili (Caron) finds a home and a job with the circus ... and loses her heart to a dashing magician (Jean Pierre Aumont). But Lili is just another conquest for the magician, who returns to his wife (Zsa Zsa Gabor). The marionettes, however, console and care for Lili with a tenderness that slowly reawaken love within the young woman.

OUTSTANDING 1953 movie with talented little (5'1") Leslie Caron at age 22. Not sure how I missed this all these years - but now I've seen it and enjoyed it as one of the best movies EVER (for me).
Lots of fabulous scenes like Leslie dancing in her red waitress dress, and doing somewhat competititive dance with beautiful Zsa Zsa Gabor, both in glamorous gold gowns.
The male leads Mel Ferrer and new to me John-Pierre Aumont (as the magician who does several terrific on screen stunts) are excellent, too.
The underlying story is emotionally compelling - the waking up from the romantic dreamworld of a young girl becoming a woman. Rather sophisticated with lines like 'we don't learn, we just get older - and we know'.
Fun carnival setting with terrific production numbers; especially the near ending dream ballet/dance of the living puppets- wow!
Rates up at the very top - like Judy Garland in 'The Harvey Girls', also highly recommended and available at KCLS.

May be the most fascinating film using puppets and real life people. Leslie Caron becomes part of the puppet show because she forgets they are not real people. Just what happens with children and adults when they watch such a show. "Lili" is played beautifully by Leslie Caron. She sings and dances her way throughout the film. "Lili" will touch your heart like few films can. Great movie for the family with the wonderful puppets!

Don't let this movie get past you!! "Lili" is played by the delightful Leslie Caron, who was nominated as Best Actress in 1954 for her performance. The movie takes place at a carnival and is beautifully staged. There are dream sequences that revel any ever put to film. Mel Ferrer is simply amazing as a puppeteer. What awaits you in "
"Lili" is the joy and happiness Leslie Caron finds at the carnival. I am sure you will love sharing all her adventures!
