Why We Ignore the Facts That Will Save Us

Why do some parents refuse to vaccinate their children? Why do some keep guns at home, despite scientific evidence of risk to their family members? And why do people use antibiotics for illnesses they can't possibly alleviate? When it comes to health, many people insist that science is wrong, that the evidence is incomplete or inconclusive, and that unidentified hazards lurk everywhere to harm us.

This book often refers to the work of Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky I would recommend going to the source and reading Thinking Fast and Slow. That being said the authors tailor the research of the above and others specifically to denials of the efficacy and/or cause of various diseases and treatments. The book is interesting enough and the authors try to highlight how easy it is for people to fall into the trap of emotional thinking. The authors detail the messiness in the Scientific Method and proscribe some pedagogical ideas on teaching that part of Science. This book is mostly written for other scientists, journalists, educators and medical personnel but is worth reading if you are interested.

Too long, repetitive, reading turned to drudgery by the end. Strictly psychological explanations. It would have been far more entertaining if the authors had tackled the big issues they mention in passing, autism, gun safety, nuclear reactors, etc.

Fascinating work on how and why our brains deceive us into resisting scientific proofs and some strategies to combat those failings.

"Guiding Principle 5: People respond more to emotion than statistics, but charismatic leaders use emotion and scientists use statistics."
