I thought this movie was pretty good. The movie was very fast paced and the chariot scene was done well, the acting also was good

Not quite a dud, but borderline. The chariot scenes in the circus are good, as is the battle scene on the slave-powered ship. The screenplay attempts to tap into larger themes of forgiveness and redemption, but the pacing of the film is so uneven the viewer, at least this viewer, never gets pulled in.

Why compare it to the 1958 version? Enjoy it for the entertainment value. Not a great movie but I gave it 3 stars.

What a piece of garbage. The main character generates no sympathy whatsoever. He gets what he deserves. The "bad" guy is actually far more likable. Special effects are pathetic. Don't even try to compare to the far superior 1958 version. You'll cry yourself to sleep because you made such a ridiculous choice. Can't believe I actually put a hold on this disk. And I thought Battlefield Earth was bad. Compared to this travesty Battlefield should have won Best Picture and Travolta Best Actor.

I suggest you watch the original film starring Charlton Heston. This new film version barely resembles the original book.

I liked it. The story was a little different from the Charlton Heston version but the good parts were there (except, "we keep you alive to serve this ship!" - I missed that part :( ).

Given all the negative comments,I was prepared to really dislike this movie, however, I actually enjoyed it! It is interesting to see how a different filmmaker years after the orginal book and movie, takes a different approach to putting the story on film. Some of the acting is a little ameturish (if that's a word!), but that's okay - I didn't think it was a s horrible as some other people did! As forthe comment about what Jesus did or didn't say, gosh, I wasn't aware we had a complete transcript of his every word! And was it JESUS who said that the nature of people is to be sinful or is that Paul's rendition of something he THINKS Jesus said? (I'm just asking......). Anyway, I'm obviously in the minority, but I didn't think the movie was a complete waste!

I knew this was a 'remake' but I doubt if the first movie was this bad. The plot was simple but came off as jumbled. The movie made little sense and the story of Ben-Hur wasn't told very well. They threw in a chariot race and with a couple of miracles and an appearance from Jesus and called it a day. Terrible movie!

Just skip right to near the end and watch the chariot race, and then return the DVD. At least, that part was somewhat exciting. Everything else were just drivel. Acting was bad. Script was terrible. Instead of identifying or liking the main character, I simply thought he was a jackass. Morgan Freeman should be embarrassed for his role in this.

Warning: This comment contains spoilers.

Now that that's out of the way ... I haven't seen the original Ben-Hur movie with Charlton Heston, but I have read the book, and I was very disappointed with this movie. Much of the timing/order of events was skewed and made little or no sense (especially Judah learning to ride a chariot well enough to beat the experienced Messala in such a small amount of time, which is NOT how things happen in the book), the scene of forgiveness and brotherly reunion at the end is very unrealistic and also makes absolutely no sense, Jesus is given at least one jarring line that doesn't square with his teachings in the Gospels, several characters are killed off (or never appear) who added a lot to the story in the book, and Morgan Freeman completely ruined my suspension of disbelief for the whole movie because I could not at all see Sheik Ilderim (especially the Ilderim of the book, who was quite a character!) behind his too-famous face and voice.

All in all, if you are okay with unrealistically happy endings and haven't read the book, examined Jesus' teachings, or heard of Morgan Freeman, you might really like this movie.

(P.S., N.B., Ph.D., etc. - All humans reserve the right to like this movie even if they don't meet some or all of the above conditions. ;-)

Faith brought you back to me. The same faith that kept you alive.
-That wasn't faith. Faith wasn't strong enough. That was hate. I became hate. That's what kept me alive.

-Don't mock. What's wrong with you? It's supposed to be a celebration.
It's a celebration of your faith, not mine.
-Well, that's the virtue of wine. It doesn't discriminate.

As time passed, forgiveness and understanding had reunited the family. To give hope and promise
