Unless you are into Iraq era mediocre films, this one is not worth the watch.

Nothing new in this story and it took too long to tell it.

I saw this film on blu-ray (which the Ottawa library sadly does not have), and it brings out the best qualities in cinematography and sound. The story is certainly an old one (e.g. the true one filmed by Eastwood), but, as always with Lee, the treatment is just about perfect. What the film lacks is a point of view. The two opposing sides on American involvement in the war are presented early on by the Billy's family (even more in a deleted scene). From then on we are given alternating scenes (perfectly edited, by the way) of the horrors of war and uplifting patriotism. The film is at its best when lightly mocking football ownership and showmanship. But whatever views you have about the Western involvement in Iraq, you can be sure they will not be shaken by the end of the film.

I couldn't figure out what Ang Lee was trying to say with this film. The story line is one of the oldest in the genre of war movies and just doesn't offer much of anything new. Maybe it's because it takes place 13 years ago in the early days of the invasion of Iraq and so much has been written, filmed and otherwise revealed about that event and its aftermath. Was just expecting more from Lee as I've liked many of his other films.

Very sad story describing the story of what every person who's ever seen combat must experience upon coming home from war. It shows that those of us who never witness combat really don't and never can "get it". My takeaway from the movie: perhaps we should better educate ourselves as civilians...

It seems to me that many of the folks who didn't like this film are those who could benefit most from opening their minds and hearts to it but paradoxically (?) they are probably also the least likely to do so. So it goes.

Wow this movie is so disappointing. We couldn't even finish it. I can't believe it's an Ang Lee film. From what I have read, it sounds to me like they just got carried away with film making technology instead of concentrating on the story. (It was filmed at a very high frame rate compared to most films). Look it up on the Internet. Anyway it's just a boring, flat film that jumps around so much that is loses continuity. No wonder the movie flopped at the box office (they lost 10 million worldwide).

Horrible Movie
Don't waste your time seeing it, but if you must make sure you get it free.
