SummaryAdd a Summary
Two 70-something widows live next door to each other in an expensive suburb of a large ctiy in South Africa. One is black, one white. Both were successful professionals. Both are very bitter, unhappy women. They disagree about everything, exchanging insults at neighbohood committee meetings.
A series of unhappy events for each of them leads them to see each other as human beings rather than the enemy. Detente, even friendship, results between the racist and the black woman who is hardened in mistrust and anger. Each woman starts to open up her heart, which affects other parts of her life as well. Neither is likeable at first, but the reader comes to understand them and have compassion. It is very well written, sad, with rays of hope.
