Obama's speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention instantly catapulted him into the national spotlight and led to his election four years later as America's first African-American president. Garrow has created a vivid portrait that reveals not only the people and forces that shaped the future president but also the ways in which he used those influences to serve his larger aspirations.

It is likely that many readers will regret struggling through the flat-footed narration and kitchen-sink inclusiveness of this nearly 1500-page book, so wearingly huge and heavy and narrowly margined that it literally resists being held and read. Even as your wrists and eyes tire, so does your mind, confronted by the author’s relentless pursuit of seemingly every negative comment made about the book’s subject. Real insights into the man (which could have been presented with analytical balance and a more honest recognition of contextual complexity) become smudged by the author’s distinct sulfuric loathing, which spills over especially volcanically in the last chapter.
