A haunting thriller set in an isolated castle in 1950s Tuscany, it tells the story of Verena, a determined young nurse who is hired to help the mute young heir within. But the more she observes him, the more Verena becomes convinced he has fallen under the spell of a powerful and otherworldly persona trapped in the villa's stone walls, one that seems to be rapidly entwining with her own.

Like singidunum, I am a big fan of Clark (Game of Thrones, Me Before You ...) who spoke flawless Italian in the movie, at least came across to be so as it was shot on location in Tuscany, Lazio and seemed half of the dialogue was in Italian. Start out to be an open book of a super nanny like "Mary Poppin" and became a psychodrama of loss, grief and fate. Don't miss the end theme music "Speak to Me" by singer Amy Lee in "Videos," a strong performance of a very fine song.

Loved watching Emilia Clark, but story wasn't deep enough and no chemistry between main protagonists.....although, ambience captured in the movie was magical, full of colours and enigma....

At the beginning:

Jakob. Are you there, Jakob? Are you listening? Jakob. Jakob. I'm here. I'm right here ... And hear me. This is how it must be. Another woman will come. You will see. There will be another. You will know her by the love she shows to you. Let the words you speak be the words that call me back to you. Promise me. Promise. Jakob. I will always be your mother.
You've no degree. But they say you've a gift.
- My skill comes through experience and a certain, um, sensitivity.
Sensitivity. You have no children of your own.
- No.

I try to think of a time before this. I hardly know the woman I see. But the past is a dream from which we wake with each new morning. We are, none of us, quite who we were.
