On the upside, an interesting non-canonical Holmes mystery story set to film with excellent actors, especially the performance turned in by Alan Arkin playing the part of Sigmund Freud. On the downside, it has the feeling of being both over produced and over acted, tending to take itself too seriously in places. A little less of the dramatic chase scenes and a little more subtlety in the acting would have made for a better film. Still, for Sherlock Holmes fans, worth a watch.

There have been many versions of Sherlock Holmes on the big screen but this one, with Holmes played by Nicol Williamson, is not my favourite. The film is fairly dated (1976) and as a result the DVD images are fussy. I did not find watching it an enjoyable experience despite the presence of some big-name actors.
