Kamzin dreamed of becoming one of the Emperor's royal explorers, the elite climbers tasked with mapping the wintry, mountainous Empire and spying on its enemies. Then River Shara, the greatest explorer ever known, arrives and demands to hire Kamzin -- not her older sister Lusha, as everyone had expected -- for his next expedition. River's mission to retrieve a rare talisman for the emperor; it means climbing Raksha, the tallest and deadliest mountain in the Aryas. When Lusha sets off on her own mission to Raksha with a rival explorer, Kamzin must decide what's most important to her: protecting her sister from the countless perils of the climb or beating her to the summit.

“I wanted to push against the world and feel it push back.”

All her life, Kamzin has dreamed of getting away from her tiny village, fed on tales of the Emperor’s royal explorers and their expeditions through the treacherous mountains that surround her home. But when River Shara, an explorer with an almost legendary status, invites her to accompany him on the trek up to Mount Raksha, the highest of the surrounding mountains, she is quick to accept. Along with her new companions—and her trusty familiar, Ragtooth the fox—they begin the perilous journey, but they soon realize that its purpose may be shrouded in as much mystery as the mountain itself.

Inspired by the first expeditions to Mount Everest, “Even the Darkest Stars” is a truly unique piece of YA fantasy. With lush writing and a plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this novel is the perfect pick for fans of both traditional fantasy and adventure/survival fiction.

What if Everest was a magical mountain in a fantasy land? What if Tenzing was a girl? What if there was a romance between Hillary and female Tenzing? This book looks to answer all these questions and more.
Joking aside, I really enjoyed reading this tale of exploration and succeeding against all odds. A delicious amount of foreshadowing and twists meant I was hooked until the end, which means I'm craving book two. 4.5/5 stars.

“And as for my soul--
I saw black fire sweeping the village, heard the anguished screams. What use would I have for a soul, if everyone I loved was dead?”
