Anyone remember that film Kids from 20-something years ago? Telly and his lisp and his pack of thuggy, droog-like friends? Unfortunately, Beach Rats has a similar feel, except with a gay-oriented theme and a somewhat older group of disaffected and aimless young adults. Frankie spends his days getting high, or attempting to score drugs so he can get high, and we're left to wonder about his sexuality...and his decidedly straight friends engage in some gay bashing, assaulting a gay man for a baggie of pot. There's a subplot about his dad dying of cancer (meanwhile, other characters are shown smoking like chimneys), but not sure that contributed much to the film overall. Felt too geared to the art house crowd. At least the young men are handsome, and liked Kate Hodge as the mom.
