"Mankind has long dreamed of reaching out to live on other planets, and with the establishment of the Mars Endeavour colony, that dream has become reality. The fledgling colony consists of 120 scientists, astronauts, medical staff, and engineers. Buried deep underground, they're protected from the harsh radiation that sterilizes the surface of the planet. The colony is prepared for every eventuality except one--what happens when disaster strikes Earth?"--

So it wasn't as great as classic 2001. Think as more fast paced techothriller with a multinational cast in four modules on Mars set 50ish years from now.
Writing was decent with updated vision & hypothetical bureaucratic wrangling on base name.

2001: Space Odyssey was less boring and more original.

It's a fast book that for once has those on Mars responding to what has went wrong here on Earth. It is like a breathe of fresh air when it comes to the whole Earth/Mars stories.
