Definitely not for everybody, but a must for anyone interested in contemporary "alternative" horror. I'm not even a fan of manga generally, but the quiet, thoughtful, almost innocent tone of Ito's writing strikes such a massive contrast with the unrestrained viciousness of his "body horror" panels and brooding sense of existential vertigo that I have reluctantly been converted, at least to a degree. More like nightmares than stories, dream-like plot twists punctuated by psychedelic crescendos of terror, what's not to love? Again, not for everyone and certainly not for strictly "trad" horror fans, but IMO he's a mad genius.

Disappointed. More creepy and weird than scary

This is a collection of horror-themed short stories where the horror leans more towards the bizarre than the terrifying. The last few stories in the book are the best of the lot.

I wanted to like this book. I thought I would. But in the end, I was just glad to have finished it. The art is wonderful, and it's what lends the creepy, spine-shivering factor to the stories. But the stories themselves were either just weird or not scary enough. Some were a little scary. Some were completely gross (in a fun way). But in the end, they just weren't great. Most were good, and at least one was pretty awful. I expect that in a collection of short stories. But taken as a whole, this book had promise it didn't live up to in my mind.

Junji Ito's brain is terrifying and weird and these stories are more of the same. This is a collection of horror manga featuring stories involving giant heads that hang people, the vinyl record of death, a caterpillar of ancestral skulls, and if you haven't stopped reading by now you probably should check it out. Be warned of potential nightmare fuel or else just forever remembering certain panels.
