"When Angela met Jason Powell while catering a dinner party in East Hampton, she assumed their romance would be a short-lived fling, like so many relationships between locals and summer visitors. To her surprise, Jason, a brilliant economics professor at NYU, had other plans, and they married the following summer. For Angela, the marriage turned out to be a chance to reboot her life. She and her son were finally able to move out of her mother's home to Manhattan, where no one knew about her tragic past. Six years later, thanks to a bestselling book and a growing media career, Jason has become a cultural lightning rod, placing Angela near the spotlight she worked so carefully to avoid. When a college intern makes an accusation against Jason, and another woman, Kerry Lynch, comes forward with an even more troubling allegation, their perfect life begins to unravel. Jason insists he is innocent, and Angela believes him. But when Kerry disappears, Angela is forced to take a closer look--at both the man she married and the women she chose not to believe."--

This story will keep you wondering if the husband is guilty or being set up. I didn't figure it out until the end. Another very good book from Alafair Burke

2018; Harper/HarperCollins Canada

I am not picky about reading mysteries, but I am picky about what I thoroughly enjoy. This is one suspense novel I really liked. Alafair Burke has created some great characters that are realistic in that they are flawed, and there isn't good and evil. I don't need to like or even relate to the characters, but I have to feel some investment...even if it is to see someone get their karma-esque ending. There were a few stories going on in this book, but they do get tied in well together. I have to say I was totally suspicious of everyone in this book. It is like when I watch Dateline Mysteries, I am suspicious of everyone as you never know when they are going to add the twist. I never knew who to believe, and I could totally feel for Angela and what was going on around her. I also liked that we saw the police officer's point of view in this case so it built more tension and suspense. While I saw some things coming, I didn't think too far in advance as I was enjoying as the novel unfold. This is my first book by Burke, but I have collected a few of her books, as they sounded interesting. I am looking forward to reading more by her.

***I received an eARC from EDELWEISS***

Very interesting story line and unpredictable ending. Writing style is formulaic but fast paced. I did feel sorry for the husband after all of that bloodshed.

I have found a new author I love. This story is a page turner. I couldn't put it down. Great phycological thriller.

One of the best psychological thrillers I have read. First Alafair book I have read. I have enjoyed books by her father, James Lee Burke for many years.
This book keep the suspense coming until the very end.

Slow. None of the characters particularly likeable aside from the cops - has that ever happened before?! This is the second book I've read this month where the story-defining culprit has barely been mentioned throughout the narrative. This combined with the bizarrely abrupt ending made the book feel like it was missing about 20 pages at the end, not that I was exactly begging for more of this "boohoo, we're rich & white & and liars & cheaters who are rich for no reason and we are openly planning to buy our way out of trouble because of the richness and whiteness" narrative.

As I've said - pointlessly abrupt ending, boring story to begin with, unlikeable characters - don't waste your time on this one. Completed 31/8/18.
