This is published for Young Readers, but it has so much humor based on old series such as the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew, that it seems at times intended for adults. Adults could read it and any of the other books in this MT Anderson series as a kind of lark, even camp. The author has written amazing serious Young Adult such as "Feed" and "The Short Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation", each of which I give 5 stars. However, how to "star" a book such as "Whales on Stilts"? The whole star ranking system is an insult to many books, making a judgement almost always without context. Getting that little rant on ranking done, I had a lot of fun reading this book. It even has some barbs pointed at the publishing industry in general, which often creates books for Young Adults based solely on measuring social data. Count those "likes" in Facebook, and write your next "Twilight". I never could read the Hardy Boys, etc., but I still greatly enjoyed this spoof. I do not think it is a spoiler to say the villain whale has a sad fate in defeat, but I guess not as pointed as the fate of Moby Dick.

I love this book and have purchased multiple copies as gifts. I recommend it to everyone who will listen. It's a great read-aloud, very funny and quirky. I wish the library would order enough copies we could read it for our book group.

Delightfully silly on several levels, Whales on Stilts lampoons series such as Goosebumps and Tom Swift while also paying homage to them. Anderson has included several extras like footnotes, order forms for the fictional book series he references, and book discussion materials. While there will be some children who won't enjoy the humor, there will be plenty who will greatly enjoy the sci-fi and fantasy elements mixed with deadpan jokes and plenty of action. Adult readers who fondly remember pulp novels, might also be attracted to this.

I first picked up this book because of it's funny title. Best. Whim. Ever. The fun dosen't just stop at the title. Oh no, it keeps going and getting better with each chapter. There's so much zany randomness in it (not that I don't like zany randomness, I love it) but somehow Anderson has been able to make it fit into this wonderful crazy quilt. He's taken all the satire, chases, footnotes, wit, and large, aquatic mammals and tempered them with just the right ammount of sentimentality. In all, I IOVE this book.

An exiting book about a girl whose father sells whale stilts. His boss is half whale half human. He says he will rule the world.

Katie Mulligan and Jasper Dash are both stars of their own series of children’s books –Horror Hollow and Jasper Dash, Boy Technonaut respectively. So it’s a bit of a surprise when it’s their best friend Lily Gefelty, just an average 12-year-old, who discovers the mad scientist plotting to take over the world using mind-controlled whales on mechanical stilts. The three friends will have to work together using all their skills to stop this dastardly plot. Whales on Stilts has thrilling action scenes, fascinating science-fiction gadgets, nail-biting suspense and extreme silliness! Who could ask for more?
