One of our favorite graphic novels from this year, the Prince and the Dressmaker pairs delicious artwork with heartbreakingly lovable characters who are struggling to just be their true selves in any way the world will let them. So many hearts!

Jen Wang is one of my favorite artists, having first discovered her work in the Flight anthologies. She is a brilliant artist and a masterful storyteller. I greatly enjoy all of her work. Knowing all of this, I didn't jump at the chance to read this, it caught my daughter's eye first. Having checked it out and seeing her read it so quickly and loving it, I borrowed it from my daughter and promptly fell in love with the story and the art, and I wonder to myself why it wasn't I who was introducing my young reader to this author instead of the other way around.
The story is not your typical fairy tale, it's a more modern story about princes and dressmakers, the changing world, and how people have the power to change and accept themselves for who they are, be they a dressmaker or a prince. A story about having the courage to follow what's right, though it hurt others. It is brilliantly illustrated and features some of Ms. Wang's best work.
I would recommend this story to any reader, don't let the pink cover or the title fool you, this book isn't meant just for lovers of fairy tales or character driven stories. This book contains beautiful art and a wonderful story that will delight anyone if they just give it a chance. I highly recommend this unique and awesome story, with it's twists and turns. It doesn't go the way you think . . . unless you think it's a very good story, in which case it very much does go that way.

What a wonderful graphic novel! The drawings are gorgeous and the writing is well thought out. I would have loved to read a graphic novel like this when I was younger. Prince Sebastian exists as a gender non-conforming individual while still being a prince. I see myself in Sebastian, and its nice to see a story written about someone like myself. I also really appreciate how not only was Frances Sebastian's friend regardless of his presentation of gender, the first time she starts to recognize her attraction to him is when he is dressed femininely. I devoured this book in one evening, and I will be reading it again so I can fully admire the artwork and enjoy the story again. I will also definitely be purchasing a copy for my own collection so I can share it with the people in my life. I would recommend this to any person who would like to see a gender non-conforming individual in art and writing. I would also recommend this book to younger audiences as it is both age appropriate for younger audiences and meaningful.

My favorite new Teen Graphic Novel of 2018! It's got sewing, historical costumes, lovable characters, and a friendship between a dressmaker and her gender non-conforming prince that turns into something more... it's just delightful!

I really enjoyed this MG/YA story of Sebastian, a seemingly genderfluid French prince, and Frances, the fashion designer who helps him live a hidden life as Lady Crystallia. It's pretty harrowing in places, especially when Sebastian/Crystallia is publicly outed and when Sebastian falls into self-loathing, but I loved Frances's complete acceptance of who Sebastian *is* even when she can't live with the choices Sebastian feels forced to make in order to secure even a little freedom for his/gender-neutral-pronoun identity. Outside of the painful parts, it's funny, sweet, charming, and the dresses are gorgeous. Very much recommended if the self-hate and outing doesn't push your buttons in a bad way.
