"Seven years ago Atagaris set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a "mockumentary" bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy. Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost. Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves"--

Let me just say I’m glad that so many of our monsters are a myth.....

This book reminded me of early Michael Crichton like Jurassic Park--fiction that explores the very real truth that we don't know everything that's out there, and we don't always consider the consequences of our scientific progress. Unfortunately, this book suffered by comparison with those earlier works.

There wasn't any suspense to speak of because it was clear what the "mermaid" search team was getting into. Grant did some nice character building but it ultimately didn't contribute to the story. I couldn't make myself care about these people, and I had to force myself to read this slow-paced "gripping [and] thrilling" (Publishers Weekly review) book.

At the end of the day this was a bunch of people on a boat against killer mermaids (and that's not even a spoiler. We know it right from the start). It probably would have made a good short story.

This was a quick read and a fun book. I'll never think of mermaids the same way again. Predictable in parts, but a good thriller about an unusual topic.

An interesting and diverse cast with strong female characters (including a female lead with autism, a nicely drawn out f/f romance) in this thriller/horror/science fiction novel (2nd in a series) about finding predatory mermaids. The intersection of science, entertainment, discovery, domination, and survival is cleverly portrayed. While some parts of the book seemed unnecessarily long or repetitive, the ending felt entirely too abrupt, unclear and thus was disappointing (far too common with many series). Still, this was a fun, clever, and thrilling read.
