As a lifetime Star Wars fan that grew up during the release of the prequels, I felt confused and betrayed after my first viewing. I watched the movie again to puzzle out why I felt this way and the short answer boils down to: The Last Jedi does not make a lick of sense, nor does it even attempt to adhere to the groundwork laid down in the original trilogy. The more one thinks about each plot element, the more it all breaks down into nonsense. Many of the other comments have already illuminated the fundamental issues in the writing, so go read them if you want specifics.
On the note of worldbuilding, this is again sidelined in The Last Jedi. The Force Awakens offered little information about the New Republic, let alone why Leia was still in charge of the Rebel Alliance (now rebranded the Resistance) instead of a high level politician or even the Supreme Chancellor. How powerful is the Empire (now called the First Order)? They lost their superweapon in the Force Awakens but still have enough power "to take over all the major systems in weeks" according to Rey. Is the First Order actually in charge of part of the galaxy? The Republic is not mentioned again, so I guess they only existed on the five planets the First Order destroyed? Why aren't there more Resistance forces and bases? The Resistance is a military force funded by the Republic, yet they only have a few ships and one active base. Because none of these logical questions are addressed, it feels as though there is nothing going on in the galaxy besides the painfully slow chase sequence that makes up most of The Last Jedi's runtime. There are more ignored elements, but these are the most fundamental ones.
Terrible movie. Ruins every space battle in Star Wars. 0/10.
HOW LONG LONG AGO AND HOW FAR FAR AWAY? or
NOW THEY HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO TELL US, EXCEPT FOR THE 40 PLUS YEARS OF NON CANON THEY WERE ALREADY MINING...
THE DARK EMPIRE- a former and deceased jedi master cloned and brainwashed into "serving the Empire" has plans to bring both Luke and Leia's children to him to be trained as jedi to his own ends of ruling the galaxy, in peace as it were...
As for the film; yes the effects were fantastic, Disney would never scrimp there. The arch was full turn since the villian who was never really a villian returns to the path of righteousness in his final act, (not like anyone could throw a PTSD diagnosis out there and get Ren/Solo a reprieve; he was never a Darth, that "proves it") and the hero returns themself to a simple life until they are needed again in the fight against the dark forces in the galaxy...
NOW the real fight, to see where the cast goes from here... poor Mayhew had to get work as a traffic light between episode 6 and 1.
This is the worse Star Wars movie ever! I blame Kathleen Kennedy, and Rian Johnson for this farce of a movie, poor acting no real story line and also they made Luke look weak and wanting to give up, also they kill him off which still ticks me off! Ugh honestly this movie isn't worth the time. This isn't the Star Wars i remember, where is the real Star Wars? Simple answer Kathleen Kennedy has made it her job to destroy one of the best sci fiction series, and has inspired people, where is the real Star Wars, Expanded Universe a.k.a. Legends which has been erased and turn into canon either way this isn't the Star Wars i remember and enjoyed.
This film is so poor, it manages to tarnish George Lucas' original trilogy. What director and screenwriter Rian Johnson chooses to do with Luke Skywalker -- one of the greatest characters in the history of cinema -- in unconscionable. If you like your science fiction laced with heavy-handed political messaging and social justice warrior viewpoints, this is the Star Wars film for you! Utter garbage!
Shallow. Bad acts accompanied with cheap CGIs. Not to mention how predictable it is.
This is not the Star Wars you are looking for..... This movie is a total betrayal to the original Star Wars. It destroyed Luke's character and jammed unnecessary SJW crap down our throats. Worst Star Wars movie ever!
I think you love it or hate it, and I loved it. It's got the best of the Star Wars formula and lots of surprises.
The other reviewer nailed it - "cookie cutter." They are still milking the original "Star Wars" from 40-years ago, as no one would care about any of these characters, if not for the rich story-telling from the old film. Every character feels very superficial here, and the CGI is laughable. Why does the Supreme Leader have to be animated, just use an actor with some make-up?
