"It's all right, you can go, you were never really here."
I recently saw the film starring Jaquin Phoenix but was unaware it was based on a novella by Jonathan Ames. He's better known for comic essays and novels and for creating "Bored to Death," so the violence and darkness of this book comes as a bit of surprise. Lynne Ramsay's film is far more elliptical, atmospheric, and complex, but both are worth your time.

I decided to check out this book when I learned that it is the basis for a newer film starring Joaquin Phoenix for which he received the Cannes award for best actor. The book is a reasonably good noir, but it is not on par with Raymond Chandler, James Cain, or Dashiell Hammett. I put the DVD version on hold. I am fairly certain that the film will be better than the book.
