"Scarlett Hart, orphaned daughter of two legendary monster hunters, is determined to carry on in her parents' footsteps--even if the Royal Academy for the Pursuit and Eradication of Zoological Eccentricities says she's too young. Whether it's creepy mummies or a horrid hound, Scarlett won't back down, and with the help of her loyal butler and a lot of monster-mashing gadgets, she's on the case. But with her parents' archrival, Count Stankovic, taking all the monster-catching rewards for himself, it's getting hard for Scarlett to do what she was born to do. And when more monsters start mysteriously manifesting than ever before, Scarlett knows she has to get to the bottom of it and save the city...whatever the danger!"--Page [4] of cover.

Scarlett Hart is a brave, impulsive, and driven tween girl. Together with her car-loving butler Napoleon, they hunt down the monsters that threaten a British-like country reminiscent of the early 20th century. Only she isn't supposed to because the society who sends out these bounties, says she is too young. Scarlett feels she doesn't have a choice though, her parents were killed by these creatures, and she and her household caregivers depend on the income. We never get much a chance to explore this side of her life though, as the entire book is a mad dash from one event to the next, and even from one panel to the next. The art style does match the setting and tone with its duller colours and scrappy lines. On the service, Scarlett makes for a great heroine, but because we never really see her outside of the context of "hunter", we can't grow closer to her. She may have a tragic past, but we are never given the chance to empathize with her. Dabbled into this adventure graphic novel are a few qualities from the paranormal and western genres, beyond that though, the story has only a few twists to make it stand out. If all you want is action, then Scarlett Hart Monster Hunter is one to try.

Let me introduce you all to Scarlett Hart. Monster Hunter by trade, Scarlett is cunning, clever, and intelligent, using more than just brawn to deal with mummies, monsters, and ghouls. Scarlett is an inquisitive heroine, which makes her a lot different from Almond or Claudette. Scarlett needs to think situations through, and needs to be able to calculate an outcome in her head before simply jumping blindly into a problem. She’s the kind of heroine who is serious, but you’d want her on your team because you know she’ll have your back.

Lots of fun. Nothing too deep or original, but fun.
