An INCREDIBLE, out-of-nowhere graphic memoir about growing up in Australia and being obsessed with/terrified of sharks. I picked it up because I loved the cover and I'll read anything if it looks neat, but was blown away at the high level of both the illustration (which blends some really excellent cartooning with photo-realistic images of sharks) and storytelling.

This was a bit of an odd one but also really interesting and compelling. The art is in black and white and is very simple but that just makes you pay attention to what's being said or implied.

Evie is a young girl obsessed with sharks. This obsession follows her through her life and sort of informs these vague events in her life that aren't really explained or given clear definition. I get that the author was trying to make it implied or make you more on guard (much like the protagonist is) but I would have loved a bit more clarity in the text.

There's a certain surrealness about this graphic novel memoir. It is like a dream of the past. Pretty wonderful.
