This graphic novel focuses on Ebo, a young boy from Ghana and his struggles to reach a refugee camp in Italy. The map in the back of the book shows the length of his full journey. For some reason, the story is split into Then and Now. I found it to be a bit disjointed although the point of separation was not a bad choice. It just did not improve the story arc for me. Also found that the "happy" ending was quite abrupt and without much explanation. As noted in the Creators Notes the authors loosely pulled this story together from interviews with actual refugees.

An excellent and gritty graphic novel that illustrates the experience of refugees. Basically the message is loud and clear: life at home has to be bad for people to willingly attempt the trek from Africa to Europe. Follow Ebo as he makes the journey...

This book provides a great way to open a reader's eyes and heart to the troubles, horrors, and pain that illegal immigrants face trying to find a better life, for themselves and their families. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in or even just curious about the topic. It really puts my life into a new perspective and makes me grateful for all the opportunities I've been given, starting with where I was born.

A story of hope amid devastation, "Illegal" tells the story of orphans Ebo and Kwame as they make the journey from Ghana towards Europe in search of their long-lost sister and a better life. The illustrator's use of vast color changes to convey the changing mood of the story, along with a mixture of intense close-ups and wide shots, allow readers to connect with Ebo’s struggles while also gaining a sense of the large-scale devastation that immigrants often suffer through.

A heartbreaking graphic novel about a young Ghana boy's epic quest searching first for his brother and then his sister. I found myself cheering on Ebo in his search and hoping for the best. The art style is eye-catching and the message of hope and determination is one that all readers can enjoy.
