Its been a long time since I have read a novel by Paula Fox and I wasn’t caught up in the story. A couple who are in a moldering marriage live in Brooklyn in a home they own. It begins with the wife being bitten by a cat and the bite is painful. Throughout the who story, I kept wanting her to cut to the chase and get to the doctor to check it out. What I liked about the book was the sense of place the Fox gave. It was so easy to form a mental picture of Otto and Sophie. Perhaps part of my problem in the book is that it hits too close to home, and the basically boring relationship between husband and wife is far too common.

Championed by Franzen, this classic novel is to the 1960s what "Revolutionary Road" was to the 1950s. Beset by a series of mishaps, the fractures in the relationship of the couple about whom the story is about reflect the forebodings of middle class society about their time. Fox certainly can write.

It was going to be a bad gray day; the ashy light in the room was already irritating, like a not of music sustained too long.
