Opinion

From Library Staff

Recommended by Kate: Mount’s lush paintings of books, characters and authors accompany mouthwatering book lists, profiles of bookstores and such gems as Kurt Vonnegut’s startling admission, “When I write, I feel like an armless, legless man with a crayon in his mouth.” Be prepared to emerge from... I work in a public library, which means I am spoilt by the variety of wonderful books I have access to. So I have to admit there are few books these days that I actually buy, (unless you count the tatty old cancelled stock that I have accumulated over the years and keep on my home bookshelf to ward off the ever-present fear of not having anything to read which, in hindsight, has proved very useful during the Covid-19 lockdown). This book, however, is one of those books worthy of purchase. I adore it, and there is something so magical about owning my own pristine copy. Whether you borrow it or buy it, you will be treating yourself to a delightful book.

Practically perfect in every way. What a discovery.

Eye candy for the book lover!
Laugh at comments about books you've read also, discover unique bookstores, and drool at the idea of receiving a custom chosen and painted stack of book spines. This is how the author began her unique career, which she explains in the intro. But mostly it's a pleasure to marvel at the quirks of the book world beautifully illustrated.

Would love to see her at the 2019 Festival of the Book in Harbor Springs.

If you love books, art, or books with art in them, this gorgeous hardcover is a treat for you! The colors are vibrant, the illustrations beautiful, and the tidbits of information about bookish things like libraries, genres, authors, and bookstores are fascinating. A great book to dip in and out of as the fancy strikes you. If you love the artwork, the author has a website called idealbookshelf.com where you can purchase her prints as tote bags, charms, journals, etc.

This book is a really lovely and delightful ode to books. The book looks and feels nice, with gorgeous illustrations, glossy paper and a built-in bookmark. You could read it cover-to-cover, or just randomly browse through it. There are many book list, on many topics. There are featured bookstores and libraries from many places. There are cats! This book is just a charming celebration of the fantastic world of books and will make you want to immediately go find more books and start reading! Yay!
