Thirteen-year-old Min’s brother, Jun, has disappeared. If the rumors are correct, he and a group of other deserters left the Space Force in an effort to find the mythical Dragon Pearl. But the rumors can’t possibly be true, so Min sets off on a quest to find Jun AND the Dragon Pearl. Leaving her family is made a little easier after she loses control of her Fox powers and ends up knocking out the investigator who is searching for Jun. Along the way, she meets some ghosts, impersonates a dead Space Force cadet, and makes friends with a goblin and a dragon. Somehow the #OwnVoices author, Yoon Ha Lee, mixes a space opera with Korean folklore and actually manages to pull it off! A nice bonus is the non-binary character, Sujin. It’s so great to see a book that just so happens to have a diverse cast of characters, without the story being ABOUT that diversity!

This action-packed story combines Korean folktales with the awesomeness of space travel! It was the perfect blend of fantasy and science. Readers will love Min and her journey to find her brother and save her small planet. I definitely recommend it for any reader and for fans of Rick Riordan.
