This is the story of a single mother and her child after her husband abandons her over a 12 month period. Installments were published monthly in Japan at the time over a one year period in 1978-79. She struggles and is isolated and lonely, although not a very likeable character.

Reminiscent of Margaret Drabble's "The Millstone," this is a candid yet poetic portrayal of single motherhood in Japan. More generally, the novel immerses the reader in the experience of being a mother in an environment that becomes particularly uncharitable, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways, once one is separated.
